Takhti
On 16 December 2014,a deadliest terrorist attack ever occured in Pakistan. seven gunmen affiliated with the Tehrik-i-Taliban (TTP) conducted a terrorist attack on the Army Public School in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar. The militants, all of whom were foreign nationals. They entered the school and opened fire on school staff and children, killing 141 people, including 132 schoolchildren, ranging between eight and eighteen years of age. A rescue operation was launched by the Pakistan Army's Special Services Group (SSG) special forces, who killed all seven terrorists and rescued 960 people. The attack sparked widespread reactions in Pakistan, receiving condemnations from public, government, political and religious entities, journalists, and other members of Pakistani society.
Awami Art Collective in colloboration with ReclaimSadaLahore, in reaction to the this terrible incident came up with the idea of going to various schools and public parks to work with young kids and students, ask them to make takhti (a traditional note pad) with a message to each shaheed child of Army public school, Peshawar. These takhitis were installed every month on the date 16th to commemorate peshawar martyrs at the charing cross remembering the tragedy of peshawar attack. The Punjab assembly at the chairing cross, Lahore is enclosed by barbed wire, was rescued by subversive hand prints of innocent children of lahore signifying 'stop' terrorism & extremism. The children of Lahore continued to protest by painting messages to each martyred child and their hand prints on takhtis, and Awami Art Collective tied these innocent marks of resistance against extremism on the barbed wires encircling Punjab Assembly every month. Children's hands pose many questions....that remain unanswered.
